Garage cleanout checklist: clear it in one weekend

A garage fills up slowly and then all at once. The job feels huge, but it is very doable in a weekend if you work in zones and decide fast. Here is the plan we have watched work for hundreds of Fresno homes.

Before you start

Block out a weekend, grab boxes and contractor bags, and set up four staging areas in the driveway:

• Keep: goes back in, organized this time
• Donate or sell: usable items someone else can use
• Recycle or special: e-waste, batteries, paint, tires
• Haul: broken, worn out, or just done

Work one zone at a time

Do not pull everything into the middle at once. You will burn out and end up shoving it all back. Instead:

1. Pick one wall or corner and fully clear it before moving on.
2. Touch each item once and decide. If you have not used it in a year and would not buy it again, it goes.
3. Box and label the keepers as you go so they do not creep back into a pile.
4. Sweep the cleared zone before you start the next one. Visible progress keeps you moving.

Handle the tricky stuff right
